“About 6.2 million dogs die each year, 3.8 million in homes, veterinary hospitals and under the wheels of a vehicle, and an additional 2.4 million in shelters 1.2 million dogs are killed on the roads each year in the United States. Many of these dogs were wearing shock collars at the time, but their invisible electric fence did not save them.” What percentage of dogs die naturally? Deaths by euthanasia were estimated to have a prevalence of 40.7%, by dying unassisted 50.8%, whilst only 8.5% of dogs died accidentally.”

Dogs often get loose and run off into the woods or into the open. Also if they have similar colors and features to a coyote then the hunters that could be illegally hunting or during hunting season then they shoot. If we create these collars that are reflective or noticeable then the hunters will know that they are dogs and not wild animals/their cousins.

The reason we chose this topic is because every year millions of dogs die because they are mistaken for wildlife or are hit by cars because drivers can’t see them so we decided to attempt to create a solution by making a reflective collar that will hopefully stop these things from happening. If this collar is successful this could save thousands of animal’s lives and save their owners the grief of losing their beloved pet.

Before we had enough research of our topic we went to the Animal Clinic in Soda Springs Idaho. We found out that they do many surgeries on animals that get hit or shot. Some are even mistaken for wolves and coyotes.

We had the idea of saving the puppies. So we looked up on how we could prevent them from death and we got the idea of trying to save them from the road so we came up with this idea of a collar extinction. How it works is by using a reflective filament so if a car light is on the car can see the dog and hopefully stop their car. All in hopes that the dog gets saved from the harmful roads.
