What’s Right with North Gem?
February has been a busy month at North Gem. Students, staff, and parents, and community members have all participated in supporting each other throughout the month. The following are a few highlights.
Elementary: 5th grade had their annual Etiquette Day which was held on Valentine’s Day. The girls were dressed in elegant dresses and the boys were sporting dress shirts and dress pants. They were paired off and were taught how to sit a girl, open the door for her, help her with her coat, and how to ask her to dance. They learned proper table etiquette and conversation tips for a restaurant setting. To top it off, they learned some dance steps and some good old fashioned dancing.
Jr. High: This quarter went by very quickly, and was filled with many different activities, assignments, and field trips. The students had the opportunity to go to INL in Idaho Falls. They had a great time and learned about the many different things that happen there. I think one of their favorite parts of the day was their Chick-Fil-A lunch. They also got to celebrate Valentine’s Day by going to the Lava swimming pool. Many learning activities are taking place in the classrooms. Students are using our new writing program to better their skills, and are doing a fantastic job. We are also having a reading competition with the classes to see who can read the most books by the end of the school year.
High School-Our 3rd quarter has flown by! This month, Myken Rindlisbaker participated in an FFA Employability Skills Career Development Event at the District level and she placed third in the Southeastern Idaho District. Our wrestlers have finished their season, having wrestled hard and represented North Gem their very best. Both our boys and girls basketball seasons have come to an end but they played hard and represented North Gem well. Our cheerleaders participated in a regional cheer competition and they, also, represented North Gem in a pleasing manner. The Drama Club is working hard to prepare for their annual production. Our Junior Class plus two young ladies from the sophomore class, have already started practicing their Promenade Dance for prom. Our student athletes will have about a week break and then they will start track practice and, hopefully, we will have a boy’s and girl’s golf team too. North Gem students work hard to maintain good grades, yet still willingly participate in multiple extra-curricular activities. We love these kids!
The staff at North Gem, with help from our community, strive to help our students become well rounded individuals that work hard, function in society, with manners, eloquence, self-confidence and intelligence. We do love the students of North Gem. We proudly support them in all their endeavors and encourage them to try again when things don’t go as planned the first time. We look forward to spring, and seeing our students “blossom”, as they continue to learn and engage in many activities that are scheduled.
Cowboy Makes a Difference
Coach Tracey Corta
Coach Corta is the Head Boys Basketball Coach and Assistant Football Coach at North Gem. Coach Corta has dedicated many hours on and off the court and field to teaching our young men about working hard, competing, winning with class and growing from loss. Tracey is a respected member of our school team because of his work ethic and integrity. We appreciate that he demands hard work and accountability from his teams and demonstrates patience and positive sportsmanship as a coach. Thank you Coach Corta for being a part of the North Gem team!
Cowboy Spirit
Mrs. Lisa Barfuss
Lisa and her husband live in Bancroft and have had two children graduate from North Gem. She works at the extension office in Soda Springs as a 4-H Program Coordinator. She has been volunteering in the middle school cooking and crafts classes for two years. She is very helpful, and always has great ideas. She has been teaching them easy food items to cook on their own. The students have loved learning the art of cooking, and how to make these meals, desserts, and snacks. They also love the opportunity to eat everything that they cook. The students will tell her what they want to bake, cook or create, and she will come up with something to fit in that category. This is one of her many strengths. She loves to see students succeed, and will go to any lengths to help them. The students love her funny personality, and the way that she makes cooking fun. She has helped to make this cooking class a big success.
You are the reason we believe in good people.
